HOW TO SELECT A MICROSCOPE
MAGNIFICATION
To figure out the total magnification for a compound microscope, you need to know about two sets of lenses.
The objective lens, which is closest to the specimen slide, produces an enlarged, inverted (upside-down) image of the specimen.
The eyepiece lens then magnifies the image further. Total microscope magnification is determined by multiplying the objective magnification by the eyepiece magnification.
Most educational-quality microscopes have a 10x (10 power magnification) eyepiece and three objectives of 4x, 10x and 40x to provide magnification levels of 40x, 100x and 400x. Magnification of 400x is the minimum needed for studying cells and cell structure.
We also offer the more powerful microscope with 4x, 10x, 40x and 100x to provide magnification levels of 40x, 100x, 400x and 1000x.
For Elementary grade levels we recommend our 2057 Series, 3048L & 40-CXM Series Microscopes. For high school our 40-CXM100, 40CXB100 Microscopes as the best choices for most families. All all but the 3048L are available with the RC (RECHARGEABLE) feature.
These full-size compound microscopes are easy to use and provide large, clear images that will meet your needs through high school. They have standard magnification levels of 40x, 100x, and 400x. or 40x, 100x, 400x and 1000x.
They are also pre-drilled for a mechanical stage if you decide to add one. Some of our microscopes come with the mechanical stage. (This provides more precise slide control.) We offer corded or non corded in most models.
COMPOUND MICROSCOPES - THE ELEMENTARY MICROSCOPE:
Compound microscopes magnify thin specimen sections. Almost every homeschool family or hobbyist will need a 40X (400x) compound microscope to study cells and tiny organisms in biology and life science. We provide this in our following models:
2057 series, 3048L, 40-CXM.
The Elementary Microscopes and cordless Elementary Microscopes are lower-cost options for the elementary grades. These have smaller, lower-quality optics and intermediate focus mechanisms which produce an image that is not quite as sharp as our better microscopes. However, the glass optics and precision mechanics on these make them an excellent buy, rather than getting a "toy" microscope for a comparable price.
Our Best Selling Elementary Microscope is Model #2057CXRC. This Microscope is priced at $169.95.
The LED lighting is brighter and cooler than tungsten or fluorescent, and the bulb should last 100,000 hours - a lifetime of normal use! We recommend these for use with grades K-8, as the optics do not provide the clear detail necessary for some high school biology work.
THE ULTIMATE HIGH SCHOOL MICROSCOPES:
The Ultimate Home microscope and Laboratory microscope provide 1000X magnification for viewing greater specimen detail, especially of cells.
They include features like an adjustable iris diaphragm for excellent contrast control and an integral mechanical stage with low-position controls for precise slide scanning.
You can order either one with a binocular head for easy viewing or a dual head for simultaneous teacher/student use and for video/digital photography.
The Laboratory microscope does have a better-quality finish, and its mechanical operation is slightly better.
Although this level of quality and features is not necessary for high school, these microscopes are great for families who have a strong interest in microbiology or for students who want to pursue a career in medicine.
Our 40-CXM series are great for the high school student who wants the 1000x magnification. These come in corded or non corded models. We recommend that you use them for grade seven and up.
Our best selling high school microscope is the Model #40CXM100RC. This Microscope is priced at $339.95.
Please note that while the 1000x magnification level provides greater detail, it takes more time and care to use -- you will need to apply immersion oil to the slide and clean the oil off the slide and microscope objective after each use. You will also need to use more care in adjusting the contrast and focus.
